FOLLOW ME, SON
 |
DAD |
 |
A careful man
I ought to be
A little fellow
follows me
I do not dare
to go astray
For fear he'll
go the selfsame way

Not once can
I escape his eyes
What ere he
sees me do he tries
Like me says
he's going to be
That little
chap who follows me

He thinks that
I am good and fine
Believes in
every word of mine
The base in
me he must not see
That little
chap who follows me

I must remember
as I go
Through summer
sun and winter snow
I'm building
for the years to be
That little
chap who follows me.

Edgar Guest exemplified the
role of a father or any authority
figure,
or one admired and looked up
to ... with the following poem.

SERMONS WE SEE
I'd rather see
a sermon than hear one any day,
I'd rather one
should walk with me than merely
show the way.
The eye's a
better pupil and more willing
than the ear;
Fine counsel
is confusing, but example's
always clear;
And the best
of all the preachers are the
men who live their creeds,
For to see the
good in action is what everybody
needs.

I can soon learn
how to do it if you'll let me
see it done,
I can watch
your hands in action, but your
tongue too fast may run.
And the lectures
you deliver may be very wise
and true;
But I'd rather
get my lesson by observing what
you do.
For I may misunderstand
you and the high advice you
give,
But there's
no misunderstanding how you
act and how you live.

On
this Father's Day, I pray that
all fathers who read this will
take it to heart, and in love
for their children, grow strong
in the Lord and valiant as the
head of their households, the
spiritual leader, and walk in
the ways of the Lord for their
children to see and honor and
respect. I pray that your children
may see the Heavenly Father
in you, the earthly father whom
God has chosen for them, and
they'll see our Lord as a loving,
caring and powerful God because
of your example. I wish for
you a wonderful day with your
children, filled with fun and
abundant love!
So
in honor of the fathers who
have been given the great gift
of children ...
Happy
Father's Day!
