FUDGE from the FIFTIES

Genelle's FUDGE from the '50s'

A few of my neighbor friends and I perfected this recipe during one summer in the late 50s
when we were barely in our teens. We wrapped each piece individually, with Saran Wrap.
This fudge was a good 'keeper' and we mailed them to sailors on an aircraft carrier out to sea.
One of the girls had a brother on the carrier and he shared it with his fellow shipmates. It
was a real 'hit' with them so we made the fudge every weekend that summer and dubbed it,"

"FUDGE FOR THE SAILORS!'
Later, we renamed it, "Fudge from the Fifties"
It was a fun 'girl's day activity and we felt like we were 'doing our part' on the homefront by
giving the sailors a treat from home and support and encouragement with the little 'notes we
added, telling them we appreciated them, and 'fliriting' with them in our little girlish ways.

INGREDIENTS:

1- 3/4 cups sugar

3/4 cups condensed milk

1 cup small marshmallows or 15 large

1 - 6 ounce pkg semi-sweet chocolate chips

1/4 cup margarine or butter

1 tsp vanilla

1 cup pecans, chopped

Mix sugar, milk and marshmallows. Heat slowly over medium heat
or a double boiler bringing it to a boil. Simmer 8 minutes (bubbling), stirring constantly.
Remove from heat and add margarine, chocolate chips, vanilla, and nuts. Stir well until it is
thoroughly mixed. Pour into 2 well buttered dinner plates.
Cool and cut into squares. Wrap to send, refrigerate, or freeze when cooled.
