Good Friday - Why call it good?

Along the Via Dolorosa - just for me

Jeers and thorns He endured to set me free

The consequences of my sins fell upon Him

He died my salvation and eternal life to seal

Upon that desolate hill called Calvary.

Often Christians have said, "Good Friday? Why call it good?" And of course the happenings of that day were horrible as our dear Lord was beaten and battered at the hands of many of those for whom His love knew no bounds. But, it was truly a good day for all of us who have come to know him as our Savior and Lord. He was willing to die, so we might live with Him forever. We have been blessed beyond any words we could try to use to describe the events of that day.

Several weeks before Good Friday this year, I think because the way the world has been reacting to sin - making the good bad and the bad good and toying with every Christian thing, I began thinking of Easter time and thought about Good Friday which is a work day for me. With that thought, I am sure the Lord gave to me, I determined that I would put in for a day off and make Good Friday what it should be in my life. It came to me to seek out a Good Friday service at some church near my home. I was searching the web for a service and found that the Methodist Church had a service at noon. I was impressed that it was the service to attend.

The service was solemn as it should have been, very touching to my heart, more scripture reading and praying than I had heard in church in a long time. It was such a blessing to me. It was good to feel the same sweet spirit in that church as it had been when I was a child when the Rev. John Ozley was its pastor. When my mother was too ill to go to church and there were many times when I was a child, I would get ready and walk across the street to the church, which then was just across from my house. They were very good to me and made me feel at home though they were a different denomination than I. I even played the piano for their revival one summer when I was in high school.

I know that I will carry the sweet memories of following the Lord's leading to that service for many years to come. I know I made a new friend there, Janet, who has the gift of prayer. It was as if we had been friends for years. She was lovely to me and we talked of people who are mutual friends and acquaintances. She offered that if any time I needed a prayer group to help Evergreen PT, or if there were a special request that needed lots of special attention, to please call. We exchanged e-mail addresses and she has received our Evergreen Prayer Team lists ever since. I know that over time I will find out more and more why the Lord so impressed me to attend a Good Friday service somewhere. It is such a joy every time I know I have done what the Lord has wanted me to do.

I pray that each of you will always remember that I love you. I pray that your Easter Sunday will be glorious, bright and full of joy and excitement as we remember that our Savior and Lord is not dead, but that He arose from that tomb and is now at the right hand of the Heavenly Father making intercessions for us as we pray in His Name. He sent His Spirit to walk alongside us and angels to guard our steps. Hallelujah joyously escapes my lips when I realize just how much He has done for us.

A Special Dedication:

This published version of "Good Friday - Why Call It Good?" is dedicated to Jeff Chadwick on Evergreen Prayer Team who found the writing among the Evergreen Prayer Team e-mails that he had saved. Given the fact that Jeff is facing surgery on Good Friday, April 10, 2009 to remove his kidney where a cancer was found, we would like to look upon it as a type of renewal for him and his life and that he will be healed by the Lord, so he can follow and serve the Lord for many more years.

Jeff was born in 1964 and is young to be facing this surgery. He has been assured that the cancer is confined to the one kidney and has not spread. The function in the other kidney is good at 80%, so he is expected to do well following surgery. He will appreciate your prayers that this surgery will end any chance of the cancer spreading and that he can be a witness for the Lord through all of this trial. God bless Jeff and praise and glorify the Lord for His great sacrifice on that Friday many years ago.
